10 Great Tips to Have Fun in the Sun :)

1. Spend time outside! Now its time to get out, get some fresh air, and enjoy the sun. Vitamin D, which we get primarily through sun exposure has many potent biological benefits including support for bone, immune, and mental health.

2. let your skin acclimate gradually by spending only a few minutes at a time in the sun at one time and increase slowly. The lighter your skin, the less sun you will be able to tolerate. In contrast, the darker your skin the longer you will need to be exposed to sunlight to benefit from it.

3. Your skin produces the best natural sunscreen but if you plan on staying out longer than your skin can naturally tolerate, wear sunscreen.

4. If you wear sunscreen, make sure it does NOT contain oxybenzone (this is one of the most toxic carcinogens being used in skincare products today). Instead, opt for sunscreens containing zinc oxide.

5. Drink plenty of water. Your skin perspires to keep your body cool, and you lose a great deal of water on a hot day, even if you aren’t sweating.

6. Sugary drinks don’t count! You’re body uses water to metabolize sugar which greatly reduces any hydrating properties. As you may already know, sugary drinks (including fruit juice) carry a whole host of properties that affect your health negatively.

7. Listen to your body. If you start to feel excessively uncomfortable with extreme thirst and or headache, dizziness, nausea, pallor, or cold sweat, take shelter and rest as you replenish your fluids.

8. Be careful while exercising in the heat. If you sweat a lot and for an extended period of time, make sure to take some fluids that include an electrolyte mix. The primary electrolytes lost while sweating are sodium and potassium. Although a sports drink will usually have these ingredients, I don’t recommend them as they have too much sugar. Instead opt for an unsweetened electrolyte powder from your local sporting goods or camping store. Mix with water and a small amount of honey or fruit juice for carbohydrates and sweetness.

9. Avoid overexposure to the sun! The sun is great but any degree of sun burn greatly increases your chances of skin cancer. Enjoy the sun, but be mindful.

10. Eat local produce. Direct sun exposure is great for your health and also keep in mind that indirect exposure coming from sun ripened foods is also amazing. Summer fruits and vegetables tend to have some of the highest nutrient contents of the year and you can take advantage of this by eating local foods, as opposed to produce that has been imported and thus picked early to minimize spoilage. Eat fresh and local, your body with thank you.
